Subnautica 2 devs revived a cut Subnautica feature for the sequel

Subnautica 2: Reviving Cut Features for a New Adventure

The highly anticipated sequel, Subnautica 2, dives into early access on May 14, drawing both excitement and curiosity from fans who have been following its development. The question that the creative team at Unknown Worlds has been grappling with is, “What does it mean to be a Subnautica game?” This inquiry guided their efforts as they embarked on creating a fresh experience while remaining true to the essence of the beloved franchise.

According to Anthony Gallegos, the game design lead for Subnautica 2, the objective was clear: to craft a captivating underwater alien world that would continue to surprise players. “We could set it on the same planet again, but I feel like we've started to make that planet maybe not as surprising at this point,” he explained during a recent interview with Polygon. This statement reflects the developers’ commitment to innovation and exploration, essential pillars of the Subnautica series.

Interestingly, while Subnautica 2 holds the numerical designation of 'two,' it is technically the third entry in the Subnautica series. The original game made waves in the gaming community, and its success was followed by a spin-off titled Subnautica: Below Zero released in 2021. Unknown Worlds recognizes the need to differentiate the upcoming title from its predecessors and to expand the gameplay experience. This is where the introduction of cooperative multiplayer comes into play.

One of the most significant new features in Subnautica 2 is the addition of co-op gameplay, which enables players to explore the vast underwater world together. The game will support up to four players in cooperative multiplayer mode right from its initial launch. “From day one, co-op has been in the game, even from the very earliest builds,” said Scott MacDonald, the creative media producer, during his discussion with Polygon. This early integration reflects the priority the developers placed on creating a robust multiplayer experience alongside the traditional single-player mode.

Developers at Unknown Worlds adopted a dual design philosophy, focusing on refining the single-player experience while simultaneously catering to the needs of cooperative play. As they prototyped new features, they prioritized ensuring these functionalities worked seamlessly in both solitary and multiplayer modes. This meticulous approach allows them to deliver a fully immersive and enjoyable gaming experience, regardless of how players choose to engage with the game.

Fine-tuning co-op elements has been a considerable part of the development journey. The team is determined to strike a balance where players can enjoy the thrill of exploration together while still feeling a sense of individual achievement. By creating an environment where collaboration is encouraged yet personal triumphs remain significant, Unknown Worlds aims to redefine the way players interact with the series.

As the launch date approaches, the excitement surrounding Subnautica 2 is palpable. With its combination of stunning visuals, immersive gameplay, and the inclusion of features that foster teamwork and collaboration, the sequel promises to not only honor its roots but also take bold steps into uncharted waters. Fans can look forward to discovering what new surprises lie beneath the waves when Subnautica 2 makes its debut in early access on May 14.
